Make a Strong Offer

A teammate from the horse barn has a birthday this week, and I love Feliks’ commitment to making a gift rather than buying one. Without prior experience, he designed a wooden two-part wall rack for hanging ribbons from horse shows, figuring out what would work best to showcase all the ribbons his friend wins. He got a metal plate and found a place to have the friend’s name engraved on it. He learned how to stain the wood and assembled the design. He also learned to make bridles for barn friends instead of buying gifts. It’s inspiring to see him make such strong offers to his friends.

This week, let’s all make a strong offer to a friend. What would that look like for you?

CLASSES AND EVENTS

Starting on August 16, this fun project, now in its 10th year, will provide thought-provoking prompts for 137 days, ending just on the cusp of the New Year (Dec 31). For 2021, you’ll get:

  • Thought-provoking and fun prompts for 137 days (delivered once a week - every Sunday - to avoid email overload)
  • You choose how much to donate to participate
  • Access to a private Facebook group just for this project
  • Four 75-minute live community gatherings on Zoom
  • A smaller group of only 137 participants to be a catalyst for community

If you want to write, I invite you to my next virtual writing retreat for women(September 23-26). Limited to 10 women writers. It is an investment in your own writing, whether you are a beginning writer or an experienced one. Together, we will build a community of writers that will continue long after our retreat is done. I promise you support, witness, deep questions, and fun. I would love to welcome you to this circle. For all levels of writers.

Would you like to receive free writing prompts by text every Monday - Friday morning in 2021? If so, text “Writing Prompts” to me at 828-248-7513. You can stop anytime by typing “Stop” to the same number.

Life is a Verb Camp update! Plans are being made for the next Life is a Verb Camp AS WE SPEAK! Once the dates are set for the Fall of 2022, I’ll let you know!

You may already know that Richard Powers is my favorite novelist. Here’s a way to listen to his brilliance. Not only is he brilliant, but he is kind. It’s an arresting combination.

John once arranged for me to talk to William Gass about William Gaddis (who wrote The Recognitions, the book that was at the center of my dissertation). I was actually too nervous to call Gass, and when I read this brilliant writing, I knew why. (The subject matter is less important than the intelligence, in this case.)

Let’s have a cookout! I’ll bring this!

You’re a goddess. You need to be eating like one!

Now that I know what Mizpah jewelry is, I am in love with it. Especially this glorious bracelet.

I’ll see you next Friday from my Orange Desk. Seek out summer fruits this week and luxuriate in them!

With love,

Patti

Dear Friends, I relax by fake-buying horse farms on which Feliks can enjoy his horse and have other horses and animals. And Emma, too, if by any stretch of the imagination she would ever want to move home again. Both are horse people. I, personally, want baby goats and baby pigs. So, I look around online in the evenings, wondering what is available, and every so often, I find a place I think might be of interest to the family, so I share it with them. Not once has everyone responded with a...

July 16, 2021 Dear Friends, I dreamt recently that I was left in a parking lot at the bottom of a long, steep hill. A friend had promised to take me back to the school at the top of the hill after our meeting, but she had to go elsewhere, and everyone else had left by the time she told me. I started walking, out of the parking lot, and turning left up the hill. In all, I walked for months to get to the top. I am walking uphill with a heavy notebook in my arms and a heavy pack on my back....

July 9, 2021 Dear Friends, There are bridge components that are, without question, vital. One is the caissons that are deep in the ground - a shared earth between both ends, no matter how different the places that are being connected. That foundation must be deep, deeper, deepest. Then anchorages are built on each end for security. Another is a slight, or exaggerated, arc, that tension of the arch we see in architecture starting in the second millennium. A rising and a falling provide the...
